Conventional, incandescent type lights can trace their roots back to the mid 1800’s when people first electrically heated a wire filament till it was hot enough to glow. Since then, the technology has changed relatively little. On the other hand, LED’s work on an entirely different principle and are an electronic circuit with no moving parts, a system which uses electricity to excite atoms into emitting light. As their cost decreases and power increases, LED’s continue to take over lighting roles that have traditionally been filled by incandescent lights. The primary benefit of going to LED’s is brighter lights and with less heat. This is because LED’s are much more efficient at converting electricity into light. In Addition to being brighter, they are less sensitive to vibration and harshness because they have no filaments to burn out or break.
Another major benefit to LED’s is that they light up faster than conventional 3rd brake lights which have to heat up before they can light up. This heating up can take as long as 200 milliseconds; in comparison, an LED light will reach full intensity in less than a millisecond. According to research conducted by Philips and Mercedes, 200 milliseconds of extra reaction time represents almost 17.4 feet for a car, truck or SUV traveling at 60mph. That’s over 17 extra feet that the car behind had to safely stop at highway speeds.
